The Status and Promise of the Giant Magellan Telescope (Jeffrey McClintock, Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics, USA) (, desde el 04/06/2012 13:00 hasta el 04/06/2012 14:00)
The GMT is a next generation astronomical observatory with unprecedented power. It is being built by a consortium of institutions from the US, South Korea and Australia. To date, 40% of the telescope's ultimate $700M price tag has been committed. The figuring of the first of seven 8.4 meter primary segments is essentially complete, retiring the greatest technical risk to the project. A second mirror was cast in January of this year and glass for a third mirror has been ordered. Demolition and earth-moving is underway at the site, the Carnegie Institution's Las Campanas Observatory. Three first-light instruments have been selected that will allow deep explorations of new worlds, the origin of the chemical elements, dark matter and dark energy, and black holes.
