Postdoctoral Research Opportunities Available

The DAA invites applications for postdoctoral research fellowships. Applications must be received by March 30 2012.

The Department of Astronomy and Astrophysics of Pontificia Universidad Catolica (DAA-PUC) invites applications for postdoctoral research fellowships in observational, theoretical, and/or computational astrophysics to work in close collaboration with one or more faculty members at DAA-PUC. Selected applications will be forwarded to national funding agencies to obtain independent fellowships of up to three years depending on the relevant details of the applicant's qualifications and research program.

The DAA-PUC provides a vibrant and productive international environment with approximately 16 faculty, 13 researchers, and >20 graduate students. While resident at DAA-PUC, the candidate will qualify as a member of the Chilean community with 10% privileged access on all telescopes in Chile, including ESO/Paranal's 4x8m VLT and 4m VISTA, La Silla's 3.5m NTT and 3.6m and 2.2m telescopes, Gemini-South 8m, Carnegie's 2.5m and Magellan 2x6.5m, CTIO's 4m (Blanco), SOAR 4m, as well as ASTE, APEX, and ALMA. Additionally, DAA-PUC hosts a 512-core supercomputer (although in the process of a major upgrade) intended for numerical simulations, large databases, and data analyses.

Applicants should submit by email and in pdf format a cover letter, CV including exact PhD date, publication list, and a potential research plan (max. three pages) describing projects to be carried out at DAA-PUC, to Prof. Franz E. Bauer (fbauer@astro.puc.cl) by Friday, March 30th, 2012. In addition, applicants should arrange for three letters of recommendation to be sent by the deadline directly to the email address above. We note that each DAA-PUC professor can ultimately sponsor only one candidate, so we encourage applicants to get in contact with professors working on their subjects of interest early on to facilitate the process. Eligibility is limited to candidates with PhDs obtained after July 05, 2009.
